Obituary

Charlotte Ann Murdock Cox, age 73, of 245 Starmont Blvd, Danville, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at her residence.

Born September 24, 1937 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Columbus J. V. Murdock and Frances Viola White Murdock. Following graduation from Warwick High School in Newport News, VA, she moved to California, where she lived in San Bernadino, Loma Linda, El Sereno, El Centro, and West Covina. After 12 years in California, she moved to Newport News and completed business and secretarial courses at Hampton Roads Business School.

In 1969, she married CPT Jimmy D. Cox. Being military, they traveled to many places, including Syracuse University; Fort Monroe; the Philippines; Fort Bliss, Texas; Norfolk; Pusan, Korea; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Washington, DC; Ogden, Utah; McDill AFB, Florida; and back to Fort Bliss for their final assignment. After her husband retired as a Colonel from the Army, they lived in York County for three years and then moved to their current home in Danville. Mrs. Cox remained active with volunteer work during this time with the Red Cross, USO, and orphanages in the Philippines and Mexico, and also with her high school class of 1955 alumni group. She was very active in the Officer’s Wives Club and was a member of the International Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church where she participated in the Alpha Circle.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by one daughter: Carolyn Moreno and her husband Robert of Tucson, Arizona; three sons: Carl Cox and his wife Maureen of Columbus, Ohio; Alan Cox and his wife Cindy of Amarillo, Texas; Jimmy Cox, Jr. of Lynchburg; two brothers: John Murdock and his wife Audrey of Boydton, VA; David Murdock of Danville; seven grandchildren: Aaron Moreno, Brian Moreno, Alisha Moreno, Logan Cox, Natalie Cox, Adam Cox, and Jamie Cox. She is also survived by her special friend: Margaret Johnson Rooks of Yorktown, Virginia.

Funeral services officiated by Pastor Kathleen Monge will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home Tuesday, September 6, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date.
