Obituary

Mrs. Bessie Whitaker Ashburn, age 88, of Siloam, went home to be with her eternal Father on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. Mrs. Ashburn was born in Moore County, NC on May 30, 1923, to the late Burley Clay Whitaker and the late Sadie Slawter Whitaker. She graduated from Copeland High School. Mrs. Ashburn worked at Amos and Smith Hosiery in Pilot Mountain and later retired from Quality Mills in Mt. Airy. She was an avid quilter and seamstress. She was a faithful member of Pine Hills Friends Meeting where she served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Ashburn was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Ashburn, her son Roger Ashburn and a brother Landis Whitaker. Mrs. Ashburn is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Janice Ashburn Nixon and Nathan of Dobson and Sharon Ashburn Molleur and Peter of Statesville; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Ashburn of Siloam; also surviving are seven grandchildren, Dale Ashburn and his wife Shirley of Pilot Mountain, Ricky Ashburn and his wife Janice of Siloam, Tammy Ashburn of Pilot Mountain, Anthony Ashburn and his wife Sonya of Pilot Mountain, Shane Nixon and his wife Anissa of Mocksville, Josh Nixon and his wife Sarah of Mt. Airy and Ashton Slate and his wife Abbie of Statesville; 11 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers, Linda Whitaker Atkins of Siloam, Leona Whitaker Putnam of Winston-Salem, Rosa Whitaker Potts and her husband Teddy of Winston-Salem, Harold Whitaker and his wife Willena of Kernersville, Melvin Whitaker and his wife Martha of Winston-Salem. Funeral Services will be held at Pine Hill Friends Meeting at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 2, 2011 with the Rev. Michael Thames, Rev. Shane Nixon and the Rev. Brian Whitaker officiating. There will be a service of committal at the Pine Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery following the funeral service. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain from 6:00 till 8:00 P.M.. on Thursday, September 1, 2011 and at other times at her home at 254 Anderson Road, Siloam, NC 27047. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Pine Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, c/o Johnny Bruner, 638 Eldora Road, Ararat, NC 27007. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Central Continuing Care and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their loving care to “Ms. Bessie”.
