Obituary

Klein, Grover Hugh, died on Aug. 29, 2011 at the Bourne Manor, Bourne, MA. Son of the late Admiral Grover C. Klein and Marie Ross Klein of Chestnut Hill, Newton, MA, he was born on Nov. 10, 1920. He was the beloved grandson of the late Hugh E. and Agnes Ross. It was Mr. Ross who purchased land from Provincetown Harbor in the East end and across to the Atlantic Ocean in the late 1890’s. This strip of land became part of the National Seashore when purchased by the Federal Government in the 1950’s. Grover’s happy teen summers were spent in the Provincetown house, where he had many friends and acquaintances. Grover’s early education was at Mt Alvernia Academy in Newton and he graduated from Newton High School. He enlisted in the Navy in WWII and earned the rank of Pharmacist’s Mate, Third Class. He served on board the air force carrier the Bennington, under the late Admiral Bill Halsey in the Pacific and landed in Japan during the occupation. Once was state side, he was admitted to the Chelsea Naval Hospital where he had a lung removed and subsequently was one of the first to be treated with streptomycin. He was sent to North Carolina for rehabilitation where he met and married his late wife, Sarah Edwards. They returned to Massachusetts and became the parents to Jack (Ruth Ann), Mark (Mandy) whose children are Beth and Jeffery, Dr. Caroline Klein, M.D., and Joseph (Josie), whose children are Christian and Benjamin. He also leaves his sister, Marie (Polly) Klein Timson of Tahanto, three nieces, one nephew and one devoted niece, Jean Timson DiBartolomeo, also, 7 great nephews and 4 great nieces. There are no calling hours.
Mass and burial will be in Boston.
