GLOUCESTER: Dorothy E. (Burke) Nichols, 91, died early Friday morning, August 26, 2011 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital following a very brief illness. She was the wife of Capt. George B. Nichols.
Born in Gloucester on December 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Margaret (Langley) Burke. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and graduate of the Gloucester High School, class of 1937.
Dorothy was an active member and past Worthy Matron of the Martha Washington Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She was an advisory board member of the Gloucester Assembly, International Order of The Rainbow for Girls. She was also a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross, having worked at the blood pressure and flu clinics.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and devoted friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband of fifty-seven years, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy A. and Catherine L. Sutherland of Chicago, IL, Eugene H. and Carol Ann Sutherland of Gloucester; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin J. and Richard E. Perry, Jr. of Gloucester and Judith A. and Christopher A. Nelson of Rockport; six grandchildren, Susan Beard, Roy W. Sutherland, II, Eugene H. Sutherland, Jr., Jonathan M. Perry, Courtney L. Nelson and Kyle A. Nelson; four great-grandchildren, a sister, Anna B. Frontiero of Gloucester and several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Emma Pynn and Helen Ahonen, and brother, Harry Burke.
Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 – 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the charity of one’s choice. Interment will be held in the Seaside Cemetery, Lanesville.
