Obituary

George W. Fisher, a 52 year resident of Melrose, died on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at his home in Melrose following an extended illness. He was 84 years old.

George was born in Lynn on April 1, 1927 to the late John E. and Mary C. (Gillis) Fisher. He grew up in Chelsea where he attended schools there and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1945. He enlisted into the United States Coast Guard on March 17, 1945 and served his country proudly and honorably during World War II. He was discharged on June 24, 1946 with the rank of Seaman, Second Class. George began working as a truck driver for General Oil Company in Medford in 1949 and eventually became general manager and vice-president after 42 years of service. He devoted more than 30 years to the study, implementation and interfacing of energy saving techniques. His in-depth knowledge and understanding of every aspect of energy conservation and his dedication to helping the consumer cut oil consumption earned him a leadership position in the field. He was appointed sales manager of Faulkner Brothers, Inc., of Somerville, one of the area's leading fuel oil distributors in the late 1980's and held that position until his retirement in 1992. He has served as both vice-president and president of the Boston Chapter of the National Association of Oil Heat Service Managers and was vice-president of the Combustion Engineers Association.

George is the beloved husband of 61 years to Mildred M. "Millie" (McCoy) Fisher. He is the devoted father of William G. Fisher of Haverhill, Kathryn A. Cottrell and her husband James of Haverhill, Sandra J. Gerraughty and her husband Timothy of Georgetown and father-in-law of Elinor (Pike) Fisher of Peabody. He is the loving Grampy to Stephanie Fisher, Sharon Fisher, Suzanne Thelen and her husband Brian, Matthew Cottrell, Sarah Cottrell and his great-grandaughter; Samantha Thelen. He is the beloved uncle of Ruthann Vanella and her husband John and family of Burlington and many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's Funeral on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 10 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by his Funeral Mass in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. Visiting hours will be on Monday, August 22, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m.
