Gilford----Forest McFarland Toates, known to his friends as Mac, passed away on July 20, 2011, after a lengthy bout with cancer and kidney dialysis. Mr. Toates was born on September 26, 1938 and was raised in LaGrange, Illinois by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Toates, Jr. . He was a graduate of Lyons Township High School and DePauw University, Greencastle, Illinois, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
Mr. Toates was most recently a resident of West Caldwell, New Jersey and a summer resident of Varney Point, Gilford. He also spent summers for the last fifty years on Fish Island, Gilford, which was formerly the property of Edgar and Dorothy Self, his wife’s parents.
For twenty-five years, he volunteered for the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Greenwich, Connecticut, his former residence for thirty years.
Mr. Toates is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jean S. Toates, his daughter, Alison J. Toates, of Westfield, New Jersey, his son, John F. Toates, of Devon, Pennsylvania and four grandchildren, Elizabeth J. McCabe, Ian T. McCabe, Walker L. Toates and Ethan F. Toates. In addition he is survived by his brother, William H. Toates III of St. Charles, Illinois and his daughter-in-law, Liz Denney Toates.
