Joao S. Fontes, 76, of Hudson, died on Monday, Aug. 1st at Marlborough Hospital. He leaves his wife of 50 plus years, Emilia (Cunha) Fontes of Hudson.
Joao was born and raised in Santa Maria, the Azores of Portugal, one of nine children of his late parents Jose and Emilia (Soares) Fontes. He came to the United States in 1972. He was employed as a carpenter for several local companies in the area, most recently for Ray’s Concrete Co. in Hudson. Joao took great pride in the care of his garden and the making of his own wine. He especially looked forward to the summer months at his beach home in Onset where he and his family gathered for so many memorable and special occasions.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Tony Fontes and his wife Luisa, Silvino Fontes and his wife Alda, all of Hudson; his four grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, Brandon and Megan; his two brothers, Jose Fontes of Hudson, Manuel Fontes of Cumberland, RI; his two sisters, Angelina Braga of Hudson, Ana Fontes of Santa Maria, Azores and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Antonio, Maria, Emilia and Conceicao.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 5th at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael’s Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
