Dorothy L. (Strese) York, 97, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away on Monday July 25, 2011 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. She was the wife of the late Stanley E. York who died on April 30, 1986.
Born in Mansfield, MA on July 21, 1914, she was a daughter of the late August and Marie (Klose) Strese.
Dot grew up in Mansfield, was educated in Mansfield public schools and was a 1932 graduate of Mansfield High School.
Mrs. York was a former cashier having been employed for over 5 years at the former First National Store in Foxboro . During WWII she helped in the war effort by working at the Foxboro Co. in Foxboro. While working at the Foxboro Co. she attended M.I.T. in Cambridge.
The oldest living member of the Orthodox Congregational Church in Mansfield, Dot had served on various church committees throughout the years. She was also a founding member of the Mansfield Historical Society.
Dot was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling, knitting and crocheting. Her favorite times spent were those in the presence of her loving family.
She is survived by her devoted children Joyce M. Niemi of Mansfield, William L. Siegfried and his wife Arlene of Texas, Charles E. York and his wife Marli of Mansfield, Christine E. Zaniboni and her husband William of Mansfield and Bradford E. York and his wife Dale of Mansfield. The loving grandmother of Liisa Niemi, Karen Wright, Brian Siegfried, Mark Brintnall, Melanie Gouck and Charles Brintnall, she is also survived by her great grandchildren Thomas Bregnard, William Bregnard, Charles Erickson, Richard Erickson, Oliver Erickson, Jonathan Brintnall, Genevieve Brintnall and Madison Gouck, as well as many nieces and nephews including her niece Marge Authelet of Foxboro, who was very special to her. Mrs. York was pre-deceased by her siblings Alfred Strese, Elsie Selfridge, Ernest “Hank” Strese, Clara Jensen, Freda McKay and Charles Strese, her son in law Robert F. Niemi, her former husband William C. Siegfried and her close friend Earl T. Peterson, Sr.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Sunday July 31st from 2-5 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday August 3rd at 6:00 P.M. at the Mansfield Congregational Church, 17 West St., Mansfield. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter Friends, P.O. Box 25, Mansfield, MA 02048.
