Daniel J. Mullens, 72, of Mattapoisett died peacefully July 21, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Diane (Krystofolski) Mullens. They would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on July 22nd.
The son of the late George W. and Amelia (Jarrell) Mullens, he was born and raised in West Virginia. In 1959, Mr. Mullens came to live in Massachusetts after serving in the United States Navy. He was employed by Barnes Tree Service until he began his own tree company. In 1966, he purchased Barnes from the late Carl S. Barnes. He was a proud business owner and remained an active voice in the company until his death.
Dan had a passion for baseball and softball. For many years he sponsored a moderate pitch softball team. His proudest moment was when his softball team won the ASA Class A State Modified Tournament in the late 1980’s. For many years he donated his time to umpire youth baseball in Rochester.
He will be best remembered for his hard work ethic, compassion for animals, and love for his family, especially his four grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Brenda Sylvia and her husband David of Rochester and Kim Fleurent and her husband David of Rochester. Dan is survived by the following siblings: George W. Mullins of Tiverton Rhode Island, Cecil A. Mullens of Roanoke Virginia, Dora Lee Brammer of Coal City, West Virginia, John L. Mullens of Fairdale, West Virginia, Ronald E. Mullens of Wareham, Benny C. Mullens of Christianburg, Virginia and Linda C. Hunt of Sophia, West Virginia. He leaves behind his four favorite people, his grandchildren; Ryan Sylvia of Cambridge, England, Daniel (DJ) Sylvia, Kayla Fleurent, and David Fleurent Jr. all of Rochester.
He is predeceased by his brother James R. Mullens and his sister Betty M. Roberts.
Visiting hours will be Friday, July 29th at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road, Route 6, Mattapoisett from 5 – 8 PM. His memorial service will be held Saturday, July 30th at Church in the Pines, 17 Carver Road, West Wareham at 11:00 AM. The burial will be private.
