WWII U.S. Navy Seabee...
Mr. John Paul Zafiris of Medford, Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the age of 84. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1927 to Antoinette and Charles Zafiris, he grew up in Medford. Mr. Zafiris enlisted in the United States Navy Seabees in World War II at the age of 17 and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations on the Island of Guam, having left Medford High School to serve his country, prior to graduation. In 200 he was awarded his High School Diploma on Memorial Day by Medford High School and the City of Medford in a ceremony where he was the Veteran Class Speaker.
After the war, Mr. Zafiris returned home where he trained as a Manager in the finance and loan business and was Branch Manager of several finance companies in the Greater Boston area and Lowell, through the 1950’s and 1960’s. Mr. Zafiris reitred from Shawmut Bank in the 1990’s, as a Loan Supervisor and lived in Medford for the rest of his life, spending time with his family who loved him dearly.
John Zafiris is survived by his wife Jean, his son John P. Zafiris, Jr. and his daughter-in-law, Jeana Zafiris, grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley and John P. Zafiris, III and his sister, Lucie Crandell.
His funeral was held from the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at 9 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford at 10 AM. Many relatives and friends respectfully attended. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, from 4 to 8 PM. Interment was in Oak Grove Cenetery, Medford.
