Obituary

Providence, R.I. - WAUGH, JANET BLACK of Providence died on July 13, 2011 after a long battle with lymphoma. She was the wife of the late Ralph Stuart Waugh and is survived by her daughter, Spence Hobbs, her son, Stuart Waugh and his wife Annemarie, as well as two grandchildren, Forester Hobbs and Henry Waugh. She was the sister of the late Robert Black. She was born Janet Nathalie Black in 1921, the daughter of David Turpie and Abbie Mary Black of Providence. She graduated from the Henry Barnard School and attended the RI School of Design. She married Joseph French who tragically died when his ship was destroyed by a Nazi submarine in the North Atlantic several weeks after their marriage. She subsequently joined the Red Cross and was stationed in the Philippines, Korea and, after Japan's surrender in 1945, in Kyoto. After returning to the United States, she married the late Chris Schenkel, a noted sportscaster. She later married Ralph Stuart Waugh, an orchestra leader and sport fishing enthusiast. The newlywed couple opened "The Avalon" sport-fishing club on Cuttyhunk Island, MA in the early 1950's. The couple raised their two children while pursuing a dynamic social life in Palm Beach, the Bahamas, Newport and Cuttyhunk. In 1970, Janet began a career as a mental health worker at Bulter Hospital. Janet continued her service into her seventies demonstrating her commitment to those in need. She retired at age 80 to enjoy time with family and friends. She will be buried in a simple, grave-side ceremony at Oak Grove Cemetery at 10:30 am on Saturday July 16th, family and friends will meet at Wilson's Funeral Home in New Bedford, MA at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated
