Obituary

Evelyn Joyce (Friend) Everett passed to her eternal rest on July 11, 2011. She was born July 16, 1938, in Morgantown, W. Va. to Dr. Albert W. Friend and Evelyn Augusta (Hall) Friend. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College (B.A.,1959), Harvard Graduate School of Education (M.A.,1960), and Renssalaer Polytechnic (M.S. 1985).

On November 25, 1961, she married William Carter Everett, who survives her. She is also survived by her brother, Capt. John R. Friend (U.S.N., Ret.), her three sons, William Carter Everett Jr., James Boyd Everett, and Robert Friend Everett, and by three grandchildren, as well as by numerous cousins.

Although trained as a teacher, Joyce became a travel agent, first with Stonington Travel, and then with Trek Tours of Westerly, RI, when Trek Tours bought Stonington Travel. She richly enjoyed planning trips for her clients and was once described by her client as “the best travel agent in SE Connecticut.” On one occasion she organized a tour for the entire workforce of Quimper, a French pottery company, whose owner gave his workers a tour of the United States as a present.

She was involved with the Mystic River Historical Society from its inception 35 years ago, and served as its President for nine years. More recently she was Chairman of Special Events, in which post she organized and led tours for members twice yearly to historical places all over the Eastern United States and Canada.

Her memorial service will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church, Pearl St., Mystic on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Mystic River Historical Society, Box 245, Mystic, CT 06355.
