WORCESTER-Marika (Kounadis) Kalis, 87, of Worcester, died Tuesday, July 5th in Holy Trinity Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Her husband of 29 years, Spiro D. Kalis, died in 1981. She leaves a daughter, Agathi, wife of the late George J. Spankis of Worcester, with whom she lived; two grandchildren, Dr. Spiro Spanakis and Dr. Nicole Spanakis, both of Worcester; a brother, Stavros Kounadis; and two sisters, Akrivi Vaphoulos and Fotini Tokani, all of Athens, Greece. She was predeceased by two brothers, Christos and Dimitrios Kounadis.
She was born in Istanbul, Turkey the daughter of Fotios and Efthimia (Gerondakis) Kounadis, moved to Southbridge in 1956 and to Worcester in 1960. Mrs. Kalis was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral; it’s Senior Citizens and the Ladies Philoptochos Society.
The funeral is Friday, July 8th, from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a service at 11:00 A.M. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, July 7th from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. in the funeral home. The family requests that flowers be omitted and contributions in her memory be made to St. Spyridon Cathedral Ladies Philoptochos Society, Needy Fund, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
