Nigel E. Owens, age 89, of Metamora, IL (formerly of Peoria and Decatur) passed away at 7am Sunday June 26, 2011
She was born August 24, 1921 in Bingham, IL to Lonnie R. Stokes and Nellie M. (Alexander) Stokes. She married Harley M. (Bud) Owens on December 13, 1944 in Decatur, IL. He passed away March 23, 1997 in Peoria.
Nigel is survived by one daughter, Cheryll L. Hall of Decatur, two sons, Richard W. Owens of Peoria and Terry M. (Tari Riggs) Owens of Bloomingdale, IL, two grandchildren, Laura (Fred) Dolan of Marlboro, MA, Todd Manners of Garland, TX, five great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and one sister, Norma Harrison of Vandalia, IL. She was preceded in death by one sister, Nonda Powell of Decatur.
She graduated from Fillmore (IL) High School and attended Brown’s Business College in Decatur, before working at St. Mary’s Hospital and Marvel Schebler. In 1965 she and her family moved to Peoria, where she worked at Clark Products and T.J. O’Brien.
She volunteered with NAMI, served on Snyder Village’s Resident Council, was a member at Forest Hill United Methodist Church, and had been active at the South Side Mission.
She will be remembered, and greatly missed by those whose lives she touched, for her grace, kindness, helpfulness, and friendliness.
Visitation will be at Mason Funeral Home Metamora Chapel on Wednesday, June 29 from 4pm until 8pm. A memorial service will be held at Graceland-Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur, Illinois on Sunday, July 3 at 2pm. Visitation will be from 1pm until service time at the funeral home.
