Obituary

Thomas Romano, 84, a resident of Andover for more than 50 years and beloved husband of Shirley L. (Wyman) Romano, passed away on June 22, 2011 surrounded by his loving family.
Thomas was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 24, 1927. He was the beloved son of the late Vincenzo and Francesca (D’Amico) Romano. Tom was a proud WWII Army veteran, entering the service on June 8, 1945 and receiveing his honorable discharge from Ft. Dix on November 23, 1946. Tom served as a Military Policeman while stationed in Germany, during his military career. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II medal and the Victory Medal for his exemplary service.

As a young man, Tom worked in his family’s market in Brooklyn, NY. When the family relocated to Andover, MA, he continued to work in the family market as well as the local mills. After returning from the Army, Thomas began his own trucking business, which he remained active in for over 50 years.

Tom’s character was defined by his strength and generosity. A man who took great pride in his ability to build and fix anything, Tom was always willing to help anyone that was in need. Throughout his life, Tom enjoyed many hobbies including homing pigeons, gardening, and home improvement. Above all, Mr. Romano was a very devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He loved nothing more than spending time with his beloved family.

Tom is survived by his loving wife Shirley, son Thomas W. Romano of Andover, daughter Deborah E. Romano of Andover, son Phillip A. and his wife Dianne M. Romano of West Newbury, and father figure to his grandson Randy S. and his wife Lauren Romano of Chelmsford, eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. He was also the devoted brother of the late Lawrence, Sebastian and Michael Romano.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover, Monday, June 27, 2011, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to the celebration of his life. Calling hours were held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, Sunday, June 26, 2011, from 4 to 8 PM. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover. Donations in Thomas' memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
