John J. Oakes Jr., of Natick, age 77, died peacefully Wednesday, June 8, 2011 after a long illness at Oak Knoll Nursing Home in Framingham.
John was born June 21, 1933 in Rumford, Maine to the late John and Grace (Filiault) Oakes. He married Lorraine Young on May 18, 1957 and together they had 5 loving children.
John served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Natick. At one time, John was a very active member of the First Congregational Church of Natick. More recently he had attended the Elmwood Chapel in Wellesley. John was a lover of bowling, golfing and camping.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lorraine. He was the loving father of James Oakes and his wife Tracey O’Dell, Kenneth Oakes and wife Barbara, Joni Rich and husband Irwin, Janice Nascembeni and husband Walter and Amy McCammon and husband Steve. Beloved grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. John was the brother of Barbara Bidwell and the late Edward Oakes and Marion Lunge.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the funeral from the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street (at Natick Common) Natick on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:45AM to be followed by a funeral service at Elmwood Chapel, 42 Elmwood Road, Wellesley, at 12:30PM. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in South Natick. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday from 10-11:30AM.
