Gary J. Nelson, 74, of Harwich, formerly of Winchester, May 28, 2011.
Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Elvin and Mary Nelson of Winchester. He was the beloved husband for 23 years to Christine (Fairchild) Nelson.
A Korean War veteran, Mr. Nelson served honorably as a weatherman in the U.S. Navy for 2 years in Pensacola, Florida. He was a Winchester Firefighter/EMT from 1961-2000, where he retired as Captain.
In his spare time, Gary loved watching the Boston Red Sox as well as other local teams with his wife and two endearing cats by his side. He also enjoyed maintaining his yard and admiring it from his porch.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Nelson is also survived by a step-daughter, Allison Helfer of Vail, CO; a son, Peter Nelson and his wife Melanie of Everett.
He was the loving grandfather of Sarah and Jessica Nelson and the dear brother of Regina Wells of MD. He is further survived by several close cousins and his two loving cats.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Sun., June 5 at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, from 3-5 pm, with a Service at 4:45pm. Relatives and friends kindly invited. If desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
