Henry J. “Hank” Whiffen, 72, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Sunday, May 15 at his home. He was the husband of 53 years of Margaret M. “Peggy” (Minton) Whiffen. Born in Jamaica Plain, he was raised in Dorchester and was a graduate of Dorchester High School. Mr. Whiffen was also a graduate of Northeastern University. He worked as an Electronic Design Engineer at Instron in Canton for several years. He also taught night school at Northeastern University and at Southeastern Regional Technical High School for several years. In 1985, Mr. Whiffen suffered a traumatic head injury while on a Boy Scout trip with his sons. He has been retired since his injury. He was a member of the Stoughton Fish & Game and a former Stoughton Little League Coach. An avid outdoorsman, in his free time, he enjoyed camping, hiking, music and playing cribbage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; June M. Bouchard of Mansfield, Susan LoDico of East Falmouth, Michael D. Whiffen of Easton, Jeanette L. Whiffen of Abington, Christine A. Ringler of Foxboro, John T. Whiffen of Avon and Charles E. Whiffen of Wareham. He was the brother of Alan D. and Paul J. both of FL, Maryann Caskins of NH, Kevin M. of Dorchester and the late Pauline Fletcher and James M. Whiffen. Mr. Whiffen was the brother in law of Bernadette Andrews of TX and Robert Minton of Norwood. He was predeceased by his parents Mary Eva (DeVeau)Whiffen and Paul P. Whiffen. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Prayers will be offered in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday at 8PM. Visiting Hours will be held prior to the prayers from 5-8 PM.
