Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Edith G. (Carlson) Niemi, 86, died peacefully with her loving family at her side on Thursday, May 5, 2011. She was the wife of the late Karl A. Niemi who died in 1992.
Born in Gloucester on July 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Erik and Anna (Andersson) Carlson. A lifelong resident of Gloucester, Edith was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1942 and the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing.
Edith was employed at the Greycliff Nursing Home in Gloucester for many years. An avid knitter, she enjoyed spending time at the former Aune's Yarn Shop of Main Street. She loved to care for her dogs and enjoyed helping her family and many friends. She was also an active member of the St. John Episcopal Church in Gloucester.
She is survived by her five grandchildren, Kim Niemi, Karl Niemi, III, Amanda Niemi, David Niemi and Kristen and her husband, Sriram Kannan; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Niemi of Medford; three nephews, Sanford “Skip” and his wife, Joel Munroe of Rockport, Bruce and his wife, Celeste Munroe of Danvers and Gary and his wife, Theresa Munroe of Charlotte, NC; five great-nieces and nephews, Ellyse, Ashton, Lacey-Ahna, Zachery and Taylor Munroe and many dear friends. She was also predeceased by her son, Karl A. Niemi, Jr.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 14th in the St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle St., Gloucester at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the VNACare Network Hospice, 8 Angle St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
