Shirley B. (Wilson) Wood, age 89, of Braintree and formerly of Weymouth died Thursday, May 5, 2011 after a long battle with cancer.
Shirley was born in Boston and lived for many years in Wollaston, graduating from North Quincy High School in 1938.
Beloved wife of the late Joseph C. Wood and daughter of the late Dorothy (Shay) Stevenson and Gerald Hinckley. She was the mother of Bruce R. Wood and his wife Christine of Hull, Beverly J. Strathdee and her husband Bruce of South Weymouth. Sister of Janet Covino of FL, Roland Hinckley of Bridgewater, Gail Jack of PA, the late Robert Stevenson, and the late Norma Willis. She also leaves eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Barry Wood and grandson, David Wood of Weymouth.
Shirley was thrilled when late in life, she discovered she had a large extended family she had not known of and she spent many happy times with these family members. She also enjoyed bridge and played with her group of friends for over 50 years.
Shirley studied genealogy extensively and was a member of The Mayflower Society, being descended from the Elder William Brewster, Myles Standish and several other Mayflower passengers.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the South Congregational Church, 1075 Washington Street, Braintree, MA 02184 will be appreciated.
There will be visiting hours from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant Street, (Columbian Sq.) South Weymouth.
