Irving Andrew Young, 91, died on April 26th at home surrounded by his family.
Husband of Norma C. Young (deceased) for 66 years, Irving leaves three children; the Rev. Maureen Young Manns and her husband Roy of Marshfield, MA, Susan Young de Carreno of Marshfield, MA, and Stephen G. Young and Lilliam Cruz of Chicopee, MA. He leaves two grandchildren, Melissa Young of Amsterdam, Holland and Christopher Young of Holyoke, MA and two great granddaughters, Kayleigh Young and Alexis Young of Holyoke, MA. He also leaves three sisters, Sara Fillion of West Springfield, Ma, Helen Senecal of East Longmeadow, MA, and Mary Kelley of Chicopee Falls, MA. His elder sister, Margaret, died when Irving was a child.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Irving will be cherished by all his family and friends for having lovingly raised his family and strengthened them to carry on after his death.
Irving was born in Scituate, MA and later moved to East Longmeadow, MA with his mother, Helen, and his father, Irving Newton Young and his four sisters. He attended Classical High School in Springfield, MA. where he met Norma Rita Young whom he married in November of 1943. After graduation from high school in 1937, he worked for Westinghouse before enlisting in the United States Navy on May 1st of 1941.
He volunteered for the submarine service and served in the Pacific Fleet from 1941 until October of 1945. He was a Chief Yeoman on the USS Shad SS235 as well as serving in Midway and Perth. He was active in the Submarine Veterans of WWII group in Western Massachusetts for years before moving to Marshfield in 2002 where he joined the Submarine Veterans of WWII in Avon, MA.
Irving worked as a marketing manager for National Blank Book Company (later Dennison) in Holyoke, MA before retiring in 1985. A life long passion was Studebaker cars. He had them, fixed them and loved auto shows where he was able to see many of them. After his retirement, he worked as a delivery driver for his son, Stephen’s business, Innovative Mold and Machine in Chicopee, MA for years.
In December of 2010, Irving moved in with his daughter , Maureen, and her husband, Roy, at their home in Marshfield. He delighted in watching the tide changes on the marsh, seeing the wild life, and enjoying Moose Tracks ice cream as often as possible.
There will be no visiting hours.
There will be a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Michael's Church , 110 Maple St, East Longmeadow, MA on May 17th at 11am.
There will be a Memorial Service Celebrating the Life of Irving Andrew Young on May 20th at 11am at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate, MA.
Internment for Irving and his wife, Norma, who died in February of 2010 will be at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. on May 19, at 2 pm.
The family requests that no flowers be sent. Memorial Gifts in honor of Irving may be sent to the First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate, MA.
