Obituary

THORNTON, JOHN J. JR. "JACK"Attorney; Lieutenant Commander in Jag Corp. of the US Navy died at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston on April 23. Beloved husband of Carol Masshardt-Thornton, and the proud father of Michael of Kingston; Lisa Conklin of Weymouth, Susan Gross of Hingham, Deborah of Weymouth, Pamela Baxter of Wellesley, Andrew of Yarmouth, ME, Julie Maffie of Hingham, Sarah of Washington, D.C,. and Cecily of Boston. He was the son of the late Dr. John J. Thornton, and Henrietta (Underhill) Thornton; and the brother of Richard of Yarmouth, MA, Gail Shea of Easton, and the late William Thornton. He leaves twelve grandchildren, and the happily anticipated birth of two granddaughters. Jack attended the Boston Latin School and Milton High School, where he played on the varsity football team. He was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, and received his MBA from Boston University, and JD from Boston College Law School. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association. He represented scores of clients as a trial attorney with tireless advocacy and skill. He was an avid sailor, and throughout his life, loved the study of Theology, History, & Politics. Jack will be missed for his courage, determination, humor, generosity, expressiveness and sharp intellect.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be kindly directed to the Sherrill House Pastoral Care Fund, 135 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130 in honor of Jack Thornton. Funeral services are being arranged by the Casper Funeral Home,187 Dorchester Street, SOUTH BOSTON and family and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours, Wednesday, 5-8 PM. Services of Christian Burial in St. Augustine's Cemetery Chapel (Next to the Funeral Home) on Thursday, April 28, at 11 AM. Interment, New Calvary Cemetery, Boston.
