Obituary

George P. Konstantakos, 83, of New Bedford died Thursday April 21, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Jennie (Xifaras) Konstantakos; they had been happily married for 57 years.

Born in Lowell, the son of the late Peter and Mary (Panagiotakos) Konstantakos, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

In 1952, Mr. Konstantakos became a police officer with the New Bedford Police Department, working out of the North End Station until his retirement in 1983.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marines in the Pacific Ocean and the Philippines, and later served with the U.S. Army during the Occupation of Japan.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, sports, and visiting Foxwoods.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, Demetrios Konstantakos and his wife Mary; his sisters-in-law, Irene Konstantakos and Diana Kostantakos; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Helen Pappas, Cleopatra Perperas, Michael, Gregory and Nicholas Konstantakos.

His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Cross Rd., Dartmouth. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the charity of one's choice.
