PROVIDENCE — Attorney Howard Whitfield Young, age 88 years, of New Bedford, died Friday, April 15, 2011 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Alice M. (Simonson) Young and lived in this community most of his life.
A graduate of Brown University and Boston University School of Law, Howard served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
A long-time member of Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church, he sang in the choir, took part in bible study, served as church moderator and on the finance committee.
A former State Senator, he was Town Moderator in Dartmouth and in later years Howard sat on the bench as Judge in state courts.
His other activities included Greater New Bedford Interchurch Council, Industrial Development Board, Industrial Park Planning Committee, Cachlot Council Boy Scouts of America and the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award in scouting.
Howard is survived by his daughter Rev. Martina Ockerman of Lexington, Ky., his son Michael R. Young of Annapolis, Md., his sisters Joyce Passos of Maryland and Louva Rogers of Florida, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was brother of the late Virginia Olson.
His family will receive friends at the Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church, 11 Anderson Way, Dartmouth on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during which a collation will take place. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. in the church followed by cremation and burial of ashes in South Dartmouth Cemetery. It is suggested remembrances be made in his name to his church
