GLOUCESTER: Richard E. “Dick” Langley, 92, of East Gloucester passed away peacefully Thursday night, April 14, 2011, in the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
Born in Gloucester on February 18, 1919, he was the son of the late James E. and Edith (Silva) Langley. He was a resident of Gloucester and Rockport and had attended Gloucester public schools.
At the age of 16 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Suncook, New Hampshire. A U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II, he served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Harriet Lane and the tug boat Guthrie. He enlisted in 1939 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Chief Boatswain’s Mate in 1946.
Mr. Langley was employed by Feldman Construction for twenty-five years. He loved to read and watch television, especially cowboy movies, and was an avid fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots. He also had a love for animals, especially “Lady” and “Sassy.”
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Adrianne and Bill Bradstreet of Danvers; two granddaughters, Robyn, wife of Don Morin and Nicole Paris Bradstreet; three great-grandsons, Austen, Troy and Andrew Morin; a sister, Alice Nawfel; his former spouse, Katherine (Elwell) Langley; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends, Joe and Marilyn LeBlanc, of Gloucester. He was also predeceased by two brothers, William and James Langley and two sisters, Edith Marr and Mary Willard.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Interment will be held privately in the Beechbrook Cemetery.Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.
