Obituary

WELLER, Kathleen Fahey Of Needham, Massachusetts, passed away on April 11, 2011, at age 95. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, "Kay" attended Boston Girls' Latin School where she developed a life-long passion for Latin. She then attended Radcliffe College, graduating in 1937, as a successful chemistry major undaunted by the reluctance of some Harvard professors to accommodate women in advanced classes and labs. Her years at Radcliffe gave rise to many valued friendships, and she was active in later years in both alumnae and reunion activities, including a notable reunion performance in "Thank Heaven for Thirty-Seven." After her college graduation, Kay worked in the Department of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where she reportedly first caught the eye of her late husband, Dr. Thomas H. Weller, while dancing an Irish jig. They married in 1945, following his service in the Army Medical Corps in World War II. Dr. Weller had a distinguished career as a researcher, virologist and tropical medicine specialist, served as the Richard Pearson Strong Professor of Tropical Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1954. Kay actively supported Dr. Weller's work, travel and teaching throughout his career. As a faculty wife, both early and sustained over years, Kay devoted substantial time to helping international and national academics, graduate students and their families settle into life in the Boston area, often hosting gatherings at the Weller home and buying books and toys as welcome presents for families with young children. She is remembered well by trainees and their families who enjoyed her hospitality and benefited from her familial mentoring. In later years, Kay frequently traveled with Dr. Weller to scientific and medical meetings and assisted him as a critical reviewer and editor of his written work. Kay is survived by three of their four children: Dr. Peter Weller of Wellesley, MA; Dr. Robert Weller of Woods Hole, MA; and Janet Weller of Washington, D.C. She is predeceased by their daughter, Dr. Nancy Weller, who died in 1992. During her life, Kay Weller devoted herself to her husband and her children and to her six grandchildren, Susan, Nathaniel, Stephen, Benjamin, Kelly and Janine. Throughout the years, Kay never lost her love of learning and language. She found particular pleasure in the performances of the Metropolitan Opera and the Boston Symphony, the recipes of Julia Childs and Pierre Franey, the columns of William Safire, gardening and growing African violets and roses, taking courses at Wellesley College and perfecting her recipe for homemade tomato sauce. Engaged and engaging, even in her final weeks, Kay could be heard ending conversations with visitors with her beloved phrase "Pax vobiscum." In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kay's memory to the Radcliffe Annual Fund, 10 Garden Street, Cambridge, MA 02138-3600, or to the Needham Public Library, 1139 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA 02494. Funeral services are private.
