Retired World War II Merchant Marine
TEWKSBURY: Maurice J. Olson, age 93, a resident of Tewksbury for over 25 years, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2011 at Saints Medical Center in Lowell.
He was the devoted husband of Doris L. (DeBay) Olson, with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 15, 2010.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on February 25, 1918, he was the son of the late Frank Olson and the late Margaret (Peiffer) Olson.
Maurice was raised in Milwaukee, WI. He attended St. Peter and Paul Parochial School and graduated from the East Division High School in 1936. Following graduation, he attended Marquette University.
During World War II, he served as a merchant marine with the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the Eugene E. O'Donnell and the James M. Porter.
Prior to his retirement, Maurice was employed as a merchant marine by the Seafarers International Union. Following his career as a merchant marine, Maurice worked as a painting contractor for Richard Sughrue of Tewksbury and James Brady of Somerville.
In addition to his wife, Maurice is survived by two daughters, Nancy Ardagna and Dee Wallace; four sons, Joseph Olson, Jerome Olson, Frank Olson,and John Olson; one sister, Doris Sefcovic; also many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Olson was the brother of the late Lavern Barr, Aurelia Olson, Frank, Gerard and Hubert Olson.
Calling hours Sunday, April 10, from 2-5 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral will be held Monday, April 11, at 9 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury.
