WORCESTER: John J. Flynn, 89, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospital, after a long illness.
He leaves his beloved wife of 65 years, Marion A. (Fitzgerald) Flynn; a son, John J. Flynn, Jr. and his wife Sandra of West Boylston; a daughter, Nancy A. Steuterman and her husband Paul of Lehigh Acres, FL; 3 grandsons, Christopher P. Flynn and his wife Tiffany of Hutchinson, KS, Patrick F. Steuterman of Fort Myers, FL, Brian J. Steuterman of Lehigh Acres, FL. His beloved grandson, Michael J. Steuterman, and a great grandson, Jonathan D. Flynn, both predeceased him. He also leaves a step-grandson, Joshua C. Savage and his wife Kelly of Wolfforth, TX; a step-granddaughter, Julie Anne Bembenek and her husband Scott of Oxford; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and his favorite cocker spaniels, Lily and Homer. Five sisters and brothers predeceased him; Gertrude Casey, Catherine Gardiner, Elizabeth Parent, Francis J. Flynn, and his youngest brother, Walter M. Flynn, who was killed in action during the Korean War in 1950.
He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Francis J. and Catherine M. (Wall) Flynn and graduated from Commerce High School. He was a World War II Army Veteran serving with the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 17th Airborne Division. He saw action in the European Theatre including the Battle of the Bulge.
John was a Lieutenant in the Worcester Fire Department where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Worcester Firefighters IAFF Local 1009, the Worcester County Retired Police and Firefighters Association and was a long time member of St. George’s Church.
In addition to spending time with his beloved grandsons, John was an avid golfer and a member of the Green Hill Golf Course for more than 25 years. He hit his first Hole-In-One on Green Hill’s 16th hole, Nov. 21, 1991. Ten days later, on the same hole, with the same golf club, he achieved the same rare feat once again. After retiring, John was the last member of a large group of retired firefighters who played golf at Green Hill every morning.
CALLING HOURS are 5 to 8 p.m. on THURSDAY, APRIL 7, in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 A.M. on FRIDAY, APRIL 8, in ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH, 38 Brattle St., followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery. The family suggests donations in memory of John be made to the NICU at UMass Memorial Medical Center- Memorial Campus, 119 Belmont St., Worcester, MA 01605.
