Obituary

Joseph Louis Flynn, age 74, of Hidden Bay, South Dartmouth, MA, formerly of Mattapoisett, died on March 27 after failing to overcome the progression of metastatic prostate cancer.
Devoted husband of Claire and dedicated father of Joseph, Jr. and Margaret and cherished grandfather of Deirdre and Brighid. Joe was brother to Carol Doherty and the late Jack Flynn.
Joe was born in Taunton MA on August 6, 1936. He was graduated from Monsignor James Coyle High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Providence College and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Rhode Island College. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Bridgewater State College.

Joe’s career in public education began in 1958, teaching English and Physical Education at the Mattapoisett Center School for three years. He moved to Brockton High School for four years. He subsequently joined the teaching staff of Taunton High School for four years before taking the position of English Department Chairman. He was later appointed Coordinator of the English Curriculum for the city of Taunton.

After ending his thirty-five years in the field of public education, Joe took pleasure family activities and in traveling, fishing, sailing and gardening. He also shared his expertise as a carpenter in cooperative neighborhood and civic improvement projects.

Many of his unique cabinets featuring Ned’s Point Lighthouse were available for purchase at the annual Harbor Day’s celebration and at other craft fairs held in Mattapoisett, MA.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 9, at 10:00 am at St. Anthony’s Church in Mattapoisett, MA. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Joe’s name may be made to the Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Coalition, care of Green Associates, Inc. at 200 Lincoln Street #201, Boston MA 02111.

Route 195 to Exit 19A, Mattapoisett. Exit and turn right (south) onto North Street. Continue 1 mile to the traffic light. Turn right (west) onto Route 6 and then take your second left onto Barstow St. The church is one block up on your left.
