Obituary

TERWILLIGER, Captain Harvey R., age 81 of Bethel Springs, TN, formerly of Upper Saddle River, NJ passed away. Beloved husband of the late Patricia Terwilliger (nee Goodwin). Devoted father of Sheridan K. Palmer and her husband Steven, Harvey R. Terwilliger and his wife Aileen, Susan T. Borglum and her husband Andrew, David Terwilliger and his wife Heidi. Loving grandfather of Ryan, Danielle, Nicole, Zack, Stephen, Amanda, Cassandra, David, Matthew and the late Harvey Dustin. Dear brother of Joan Eckhardt. Harvey graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. After graduating from King’s Point he was commissioned as an ensign in the US Navy. He was a Korean War veteran who served on-board the USS Coolbaugh, a Buckley-Class Destroyer Escort. After serving in the Navy, Harvey began his career as a Merchant Marine with US Lines, sailing on the passenger ships USS America and USS United States. As a merchant marine, he aided US forces during the Vietnam War by sailing supplies and cargo to various ports of call in the region. Harvey went on to become a sailing master, earning an unlimited Master’s License and the designation of Captain. Captain Terwilliger retired after serving nearly 40 years at sea. Captain Terwilliger was a member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots, The Propeller Club, The Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, and various other maritime organizations and groups. He was also an officer for the Terwilliger Family Association. Friends and family are invited for visitation at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ on Thursday from 11:30 – 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will begin at the funeral home immediately after visitation on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Rosendale Cemetery, Rosendale, NY.
