Joseph Magnell

...retired from Polaroid; USCG Veteran WWII; 82

TEWKSBURY - Joseph Magnell, age 82, a seven year veteran of the Coast Guard, died Saturdaymorning, Jan. 17, at the Wentworth Skilled Care Center in Lowell after a lengthy illness. He wasthe husband of Mary H. (Cordeau) Magnell, with whom he had celebrated a 61st weddinganniversary this past Nov. 15th.

He was born in East Boston, July 9, 1921, a son of the late Joseph N. and Hilma (Bibbey)Magnell. He was raised in East Boston, and lived in Tewksbury for the past 42 years.

During his seven year enlistment, he sailed the Pacific and Asiatic theaters as well as the Europeanand Atlantic theaters, aboard numerous ships and cutters. He also had served as Commander ofthe 1st C.G. District in Boston.

Following his discharge from the USCG, his early career was with Northeast Airlines. He retired from Polaroid in Cambridge.

He was a communicant of St. William’s Church.

He was an avid gardener of both vegetables and flowers.

Besides his wife he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, William and Dotty Magnell ofTewksbury; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Thomas Ivers of Brockton; dearest friendsDiane (Murray) and Joseph George of Tewksbury; and many dear friends.

He was also brother of the late Wallace Magnell, Florence Hartman, Edward Magnell, and uncleof the late Charles “Chucky” Hartman.

Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Jan. 20, in St. William’sChurch. Interment with USCG Honors was at St. Mary’sCemetery, No. Tewksbury.
