FLORAL CITY, FL – John J. “Sonny” Almeida, husband of the late Barbara (Conaty) Almeida, died at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, FL on Feb. 26, 2011.
He was 81.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late John S. and Mary P. (Baptiste) Almeida.
Raised and educated in Taunton area schools, he later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Almeida worked for the Bay State Gas Co. for over 37 years, retiring in 1982.
He moved to Florida in 1990, and resided in Floral City where he was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
He was also a member of the Elks Lodge 150 and Portuguese American Civic Club in Taunton, and the American Legion post 155 in Crystal River, FL.
He leaves a daughter, Sherri Lynn Almeida of CA; two stepsons, Kelly Conaty and his wife Patricia of Birmingham, AL, and Jay T. Conaty of New Bedford; a sister, Irene Amaral of Taunton; eleven grandchildren, Kara, Colin, Anastasia, SniJana, Alana, and Olivia Conaty, all of Birmingham, AL, Sarah Conaty Riley of San Diego, CA, JayT Conaty and his wife Merisa of Key West, FL, and Katie and Tyler Conaty, both of New Bedford; and a nephew, Marty J. Amaral and his wife Christine of Taunton.
He was also the brother of the late Jenny Gomes.
Private committal services were held at the MA National VA Cemetery in Bourne.
