Obituary

Marjorie M. "Midge" Trudel, 91, of Dartmouth died Wednesday March 2, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Rhodes and Maggie (Mitchell) Smith, she lived in this area most of her life. She graduated from New Bedford High School, Class of 1937, and from Northeastern School of Physical Education. She also took courses at Boston and Harvard Universities. She was employed by the New Bedford School Department from 1947 to 1964, and was head of elementary physical education in Middleboro from 1967 until her retirement in 1981.
Midge was one of the area's outstanding female athletes. She won the New Bedford Women's Singles Tennis titles in 1938 and 1939, Women's Doubles in 1939, and Mixed Doubles in 1939 and 1940. An avid golfer, she won the Reservation Golf Club Championship, the Esther Besorosky Tournament, the Ladies Fourball at the Country Club of New Bedford with Millie Sylvia, as well as the Tom Brennan and Frank Hornshaw trophies.
She is survived by her devoted and caring friends, Roger and Rita Beauregard of Dartmouth.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation Monday 10-11 AM prior to the service. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
