Obituary

HOWARD A. ARKELL, age 66, a lifelong resident of Hingham, died on Sunday, Jan. 11th at the Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton after a long battle with cancer. Born in Weymouth, Mr. Arkell graduated from Hingham High School and Massasoit Community College in Brockton. He served with the United States Air Force for 4 and 1/2 years before joining the Hingham Police Department in 1962. He served the department for 32 years retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association.Mr. Arkell was an active member and High Priest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hingham. For the past 25 years, he also served as the church custodian and, in addition, was the superintendant of the Liberty Plain Cemetery in South Hingham.Husband of Louise J. (Welliver) Arkell of Hingham, he leaves 7 children; Howard A. Arkell, Jr. of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, Richard W. Arkell of Gilbert, AZ, Daniel J. Arkell of Topeka, KS, Benjamin C. Arkell of Provo, UT, Kimberly M. Farner of Aptos, CA, Amy L. Arkell of Quincy and Shelly M. Villarreal of Waltham. He was also the father of the late Aaron L.J. Arkell and brother of the late Russell H. Arkell. Also survived by 17 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.A Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 15th at 10 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 379 Gardner St., Hingham.Visiting hours at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Primary Childrens Foundation, ATT: Marilyn, P.O. Box 58249, Salt Lake City, UT 84158.The interment will be in the Liberty Plain Cemetery, South Hingham.
