Obituary

BOSTON — Metcalf "Buzz" Kingman, Jr., age 74 years of Mattapoisett, died Friday, February 25, 2011, at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Metcalf Sr. and Helen (Bruce) Kingman and a graduate of New Bedford High School Class of 1954 and Babson College Class of 1957. After a short stint in the Army stationed at Fort Bragg and college graduation, he became employed at the First National Bank of Boston in the corporate loan department. In 1971, he and his partner David opened Hawthorn Florist in North Dartmouth and they enjoyed a long award-winning and distinguished career until they retired in 1999.

Buzz enjoyed reading in their beautiful gardens, traveling the globe including Hawaii, London, Paris, Amsterdam and the Caribbean as well as trips across the U.S. and Canada and entertaining at his home in Mattapoisett.

He was a life-long member of Grace Episcopal Church and a long standing member of the Wamsutta Club in New Bedford.

Mr. Kingman is survived by his partner of forty years, David F. Quick; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his twin sister, Ruth Kingman Greenhalgh, his sister, Clara Kingman Damon; and cousin, Ruth Allen.

His memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 5th at 11 A.M. in Grace Episcopal Church, County and School Sts., NB. Remembrances may be made in his name to his church at 133 School St., NB 02740. Burial is private in the family lot at Rural Cemetery.
