Mrs. Mattie Evelyn O’Neal East, age 75, wife of Denny Edward East, of Ararat, passed away on Monday, February 28, 2011 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. She was born in Surry County on February 12, 1936 to the late Oscar Lee and Alice Gillispie O’Neal. Mrs. East had retired from Spencer’s and was of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. East is survived by her loving husband, Denny Edward East, of the home, one son and daughter-in-law, Denny Lee (Diann) East, of Ararat, NC, three daughters and son-in-laws, Jane (Michael) Martin, of Dobson, Sue East Alderman, of Mt. Airy, and Scarlet Ann (Junior) Coalson, of Ararat, VA; nine grandchildren, Shannon Starr, Casey Walters, Denny Lee East Jr., Jason Martin, Eric Martin, Kari Brandt, Holli Alderman, Nikki Coalson, and Ashley Coalson; five great-grandchildren, Kaylee Walters, Kelsey Martin, Timothy James Brandt, Mattie Brandt, and Jessie Brandt; three sisters, Mozzelle Harrell, Annie Bowman, and Jackie Atkins; and one brother, Bob O’Neal. Mrs. East was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Glenn O’Neal, and Clinton O’Neal, a sister, Roxie Chilton, and one son-in-law, Timothy Alderman. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Cox-Needham Chapel at 2:00 P.M with the Rev. Bill Faw and Bro. Mike Martin officiating with interment to follow at Ararat Friends Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 6-8 PM at Cox-Needham Funeral Home.
