Howard R. Johnston, 86, Clarksville, died Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Fieldstone Place Retirement Center. No services are planned. Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born March 31, 1924 in Bruce Lake, Indiana son of the late Ralph Valentine Johnston and Thelma Reed Johnston. He is also preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Pauline and their son Eric. LTC (RET) Howard R. Johnston was retired from the US Army after 23 years on active duty. He was a combat veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a Senior Aviator, qualified in fixed and rotary wing aircraft and the 44th certified Flight Examiner in the United States. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and Vietnam Helicopter's Association. He was a member of the Jewish faith. Survivors include daughters: Nicole' Vance (Herschel) of St. Louis, Missouri and Jill Gilbert (James) of Clarksville, Tennessee; sister Sharon Hiland (Jim) of Glendale, Arizona; and four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
