GLOUCESTER: Joseph C. Orlando, 94, of 4 Kings Road, died Thursday, February 24, 2011 in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Jean C. (Christopher) Orlando, who died in January of 2003. They had shared sixty-three years of marriage.
Born in Gloucester on November 8, 1916, he was the son of the late Vincent and Sarah (Palazola) Orlando. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and attended Gloucester public schools.
At the early age of twelve, he first fished with his father and brother, John. He also fished aboard his brother’s boat, The Inca, but did not go with them on the ill-fated trip in January of 1944 when the boat sank. On that trip, the entire crew was lost including, his father, brother, John, and brother-in-law, Vito Asaro. He was also a member of the crew on numerous other boats including the Eagle, St. George, St. George II and Jean D-Arc. He was a lifelong member of the St. Peter’s Club.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Vincent and Donna (Hinckley) Orlando and Louis Orlando; grandchildren, Timothy Orlando and Deana, wife of Joseph Collins and great-grandchildren, Marissa Orlando, Sarah-Jean Collins, and Tiffany Mitchell and her son, Anthony Mitchell; a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Josephine Orlando; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nina and Mike Favazza and Nancy and Gordon Kinghorn and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brothers, John, Gaspar, Carlo; and sisters, Madeline, Petrina, Florence, Antoinette and Phyllis; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Panola and Louis Christopher and brother-in-law, Peter Christopher.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday morning in the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 p.m. in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery.
