Obituary

Louise Drake Astin Smith died February 23, 2011 in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Formally of Park Circle, she was a resident of Emertus of Danville (Loyalton).

Born in Schoolfield, VA June 15, 1918; she was the daughter of Albert Cleveland Drake and Molly Hundley Drake. Employed as a weaver in Dan River Mills for many years, she lived most of her 92 years on Park Circle. She was first married to Charles W. Astin, then to Roger W. Smith.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a brother, Alvin Drake of Danville; one half brother and two half sisters, Martin Drake, Violet Drake and Ruby D. Gunter of West Columbia, S.C. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, E. Dwayne Shelton of Danville.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy A. Shelton of Danville; a granddaughter, Holly S. Riddle and husband Stephen of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; a grandson, Mark R. Shelton and wife Brenda of Danville; also, two step great-granddaughters, Brittany and Marisa Pennell.

Louise was a long time member of Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church and a Charter member of Unity Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens, Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Losee officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home,Friday February 25 from 7-8:30 p.m.

The family will be at the home of Mark R. Shelton, Mrs. Smiths’ grandson. The address is 119 Blue Ridge View Dr., Danville, VA.

Memorials can be made to the Unity Presbyterian Church or to a charity of choice.
