Catherine “Kay” (Smerlas) Yaitanes, 89, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at Norwood Hospital on Thursday, February 10 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late James F. Yaitanes. Born in Cambridge, she was a graduate of Cambridge High & Latin School. She was a resident of Stoughton for the past 65 years. Mrs. Yaitanes was a sales clerk for Cherry, Webb and Touraine in Brockton for 23 years before retiring. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton, as well as the Democratic Town Committee in Stoughton and the Messinean Society. She was an avid Boston sports fan.
Mrs. Yaitanes is survived by her children, Stephanie M. Yaitanes and her fiancé Stephen Becker of Easton, Diane C. “Dee” Yaitanes-Fletcher and her husband Alan of Hull and Freddie J. Yaitanes and his wife Kathy Jordan of Stoughton. She was the sister of the late Charles Smerlas and Peter Smerlas. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Betty Smerlas, Catherine Smerlas and Ann Yaitanes. She was the Yiayia of Philip, Adam and Eric Giovanello and their families and Justin, James, Alex and Amanda Yaitanes. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and god-children.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Monday, February 14 at 10 AM followed by a Funeral Service at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Brockton at 11 AM. Visiting Hours Sunday from 2-6 PM. Burial will take place at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Donations in Kay’s name may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 457 Oak St., Brockton, MA 02301.
