Brown Jones, age 91, of 435 Mimosa Street, Danville, died Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at his residence after a decline in health for the past 27 months.
Born November 11, 1919 in Floyd County, VA, he was the son of the late Lucias Jones and Mary Bell Guillams Jones. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served during World War II and receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and worked in the maintenance department for Dan River, Inc. and for Chatmoss Country Club and Glen Oak Country Club. His wife, Elizabeth Folgeman Jones, predeceased him. Mr. Jones attended Schoolfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters: Lavonne Jones Sours and her husband Eugene of Danville, Jennifer Jones Richardson and her husband Russell of Aiken, SC; one son: Michael Jones of Martinsville; two grandchildren: Amy Jones of Richmond and Clif Jones of Martinsville.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by six brothers, Leonard Jones, Odell Jones, Roy Jones, Thurman Jones, Erman Jones, and Elton Jones, and by six sisters, Neithie Hill, Edna Radford, Alma Graham, Dora Bradshaw, Sarah Wimmer, and Lula Mae Jones Beale.
Graveside funeral services officiated by Rev. David Turbyfill and Rev. Daryl Joyce will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Friday, February 11, 2011 from 7 until 8:30 p.m., and at other times they will be at the residence of Lavonne Sours, 426 Mimosa Street.
The family wishes to extend their special thanks to the sitters, Beverly, Belinda, Pearl, Bernice, and Barbara. They also wish to especially thank the staff of Hospice.
