Obituary

Bernard Fernandes, 89, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died at Copley at Stoughton on Sunday, February 6. He was the husband of the late Bervinda (Gonsalves) Fernandes. Born in Stoughton, he moved to Madeira Island, Portugal and was educated there before moving back to Stoughton at age 17. Mr. Fernandes was a mill worker at American Bilt Rite in Stoughton for many years until he retired in 1979. He then worked in the produce department at Stop & Shop in Stoughton until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of Club Luis de Camoes and the Portuguese National Club both in Stoughton. Mr. Fernandes enjoyed his time at home spending time with his family, gardening and tending to his grape vines.
Mr. Fenandes is survived by his children, Bernard C. Fernandes, Rose T. Foulsham, Elizabeth R. Fullerton and Margaret A. “Peggy" DeLorey all of Stoughton. He was the brother of Anthony Fernandes and Mary Coelho both of Stoughton, Theresa Bettencourt of CA and the late Abel Jardim. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Bernard’s family is grateful to the staff at the Copley at Stoughton for their care and compassion during his stay there.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Thursday, February 10 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Wednesday from 5-8 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in Bernard’s name may be made to the Copley at Stoughton, 380 Sumner St., Stoughton, MA 02072.
