Obituary

DIAMANTIS "NICHOLAS" VAFIDES, a resident of Hull for more than 80 years, died on Feb. 2nd, 2011 at the age of 91. Nick grew up in Hull, graduated from Hingham High School, and served in the US Navy aboard the USS Indiana during World War II where he earned 12 battle stars. He and all the Vafides' boys proudly served their country during WW II at the same time. Nick will be buried in his beloved pea coat that he said saved his life during the war. He was the second generation owner for 66 years of Nick's Tailor Shop in Boston's South End. Nick was a competitive championship horseshoe player for many years and loved travelling to various venues around the country to compete.

Nick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne "Snookie" (Jacobs); his sons, Robert and his wife Nancy, Paul and his wife Donna (Troupes), Mark and his fiancée, Tobe Sachs all of Hull; his grandsons Eric of Hull, Christopher and his wife Julie (Lungarini) of Carver, and Nikolas and Jacob Vafides of Mandeville, Louisiana. Nick leaves his brothers John, Henry, Charlie and William and was predeceased by brother Alex and sisters Electra and Helen. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 7th at 11 AM at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Friends may visit at the Downing Chapel prior to the service from 10-11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nick's memory may be made to Wellspring Multi-Service Center, 812 Nantasket Ave., Hull, MA 02045

Interment with US Navy military honors will be held at the Mass. National Cemetery in Bourne, MA on Monday at 2 PM.
