Eileen M. (Polk) O’ Brien,-The world’s greatest Mother and Nana passed over into eternal peace from her home in Hanson on Wednusday February 2nd.She was 86 years old.
Eileen was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, daughter of the late Richard H. and Mary Ellen (Durnell) Polk. She spent most of her younger life living in Boston. Eileen was employed at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Boston as a switchboard operator through the 1950’s and 60”s.She retired from the Brockton School Department, where she worked as a secretary in I993.
She was a renowned knitting and crotchet teacher in the Brockton Community Education program. She was a lifelong Red Sox fan with a great sense of humor. Other than her children and grandchildren, one of the highlights of her life was meeting Luis Tiant.
Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Francis W. O’Brien, her son William O’Brien, brothers Robert and Alfred and her sister Doris McCarthy.
She is survived by her daughters Marian (O’Brien) Gilmore and her husband Ed of Hanson, Kathleen (O’Brien) DiRamio and her husband Bob of Nashua NH. She also leaves behind 9 grandchildren who made her life complete; Meghan (Gilmore ) Butka and husband David of Providence, RI, Elizabeth, Kevin and Peter Gilmore; Melanie, Jillian, Nick DiRamio of Nashua, NH and Tara and Maureen O’Brien of Salem, NH. She also leaves behind her sister Ellen Sciog of Walpole, MA and her cousin Eleanor Binda of Lubec, ME, whom Eileen considered a sister.
Her services will be held on Saturday February 5th at 11:15AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00PM in the St Joseph’s the Worker Church, Maquan St., Hanson. Burial will be on Monday February 7th in the MA VA National Cemetery in Bourne, MA at 11:15AM.Visiting hours will be held on Friday February 4th from 2:00-4:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM
