June Dykes Young, 91, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held 2 P.M., Thursday, January 27 in the Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Mike Ruffin officiating. Eulogies will be given by Raye Young and Betty Mercier. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Young was born June 19, 1919 in Fitzgerald to the late William R. and Frances Gaff Dykes. She lived in Fitzgerald most of her life, graduating from Fitzgerald High School in 1936. Mrs. Young attended South Georgia College and received her B.S Degree in English and Masters Degree in Education from Valdosta State College. She worked for the Ben Hill County Department of Family and Children Services for 18 years, retiring as Director. She then taught English at Ocilla High School for 4 years and Fitzgerald High School for 12 years. Mrs. Young was a member and former church historian of the First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Women’s Club and the Music Study Club.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Bobby (Sue) Young of Fitzgerald, Madison Weeks of Jacksonville, FL, William R. Dykes, III of Alachua, FL, Marian (Bill) Weeks Lutwack of Marietta and Patsy Dykes of Texas. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Vernon Young.
