Obituary

Margit E. Watrous, 78, of Colonel Ledyard Hwy., Ledyard, CT, passed away Monday, January 24, 2011, at home, due to pancreatic cancer.

Margit was born in Aseda, Sweden, March 18, 1932, to Per and Helga Wirsen. She came to America in 1952 at the age of 20, visiting relatives in Chicago, IL, Sarasota, FL and New London, CT.

She met her husband of 53 years, Reverend Stephen Daniel Watrous, they married at the Old Mystic Baptist Church, on June 29, 1957. She led a life of service for Christ, her family and community as a pastor’s wife and homemaker, a part-time caregiver (she attended nursing school in Sweden) and also worked for 8 years at the Prayer Tower at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK. She and her husband helped pastor and served in several Assembly of God churches over the years. She helped organize and spoke at numerous Christian conferences and meetings throughout New England. Margit traveled and supported missionaries and missions work around the world including: Puerto Rico, Kenya, the Baltic States and Russia. She has many dear friends from all over the world.

Margit remained a Swedish citizen and a resident alien of the United States, residing in the US since marriage. They lived and travelled across much of America. Known for her blunt, matter-of-fact style, she worked tirelessly for and cared more for others than herself – always looking at the bigger picture.

Margit is survived by her husband Steve,79 years of age, retired pastor of Ledyard First Assembly of God church who is the son of Rev. Fred and Angie Watrous of Ledyard, CT, (also a former pastor of Ledyard First Assembly) and her five sons: Dr. Daniel A. Watrous, Visalia, CA, Fred S. Watrous, Vonga, Sweden, Everett R. Watrous, Ledyard, CT, Samuel E. Watrous, Ledyard, CT, Reverend Mark J. Watrous, Ledyard, CT (current pastor of Friendship Community Church – formerly Ledyard First Assembly). Also survived by her younger sister and husband Ulla and Torsten Paulsson from Vonga, Sweden, 5 daughter-in-laws and 19 grand and step-grandchildren in the US and Sweden.

A funeral service for her dear friends and family will be held on Saturday, February 5th, at 10:00am at the Friendship Community Church, Colonel Ledyard Hwy., Ledyard, CT, to include a brief, cemetery graveside prayer and burial across the road. A time for sharing and refreshment will follow. Our hope is for friends to share their thoughts and celebrate her life and her eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ. This world is not our home.
