GLOUCESTER: William M. Ingersoll, 79, of Washington Street died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 20, 2011.
Born in Gloucester on October 25, 1931, he was the son of the late Robert T. and Lempi E. (Martin) Ingersoll. He was a 1949 graduate of the Gloucester High School and received his B.A. and M.A. in history from Boston University.
He was inducted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served as a radio operator while stationed in Germany.
Upon his return, he joined the U.S. Customs Service as an import specialist. He was assigned to a post in San Juan, Puerto Rico and later Tampa, Florida. Among his numerous career achievements, he received the Albert Gallatin Award from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in 1988.
He retired after thirty years of service to enjoy the thoughtful company of friends and neighbors, his “fishing buddies” and fellow dog lovers met while walking his two labs, Mike and Bruin, at the Goose Cove Reservoir. An avid fisherman, he was a member of the National Saltwater Angler Registry.
He is survived by his cousins and their families, Sharon Martin Kachmar, wife of Peter Kachmar, Steven, husband of Jeanne Martin, David, husband of Dee Martin, Linda Martin Zimon, wife of Louis Zimon and Robert DeCoste.
His funeral service will be held Saturday morning in the Wesleyan Cemetery at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
