GLOUCESTER: Marie Anne Hawks, 93, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, MA, died Sunday, January 9, 20011 in the Concord Healthcare Center.
Born in Albany, New York on August 23, 1917, she was the daughter of the late James Russel Hawks and Marie Catherine (Dench) Hawks. She was also predeceased by a brother, William Brewster Hawks.
Anne or Annie, as she was called, grew up and was educated in New York and later attended Columbia University. However, summers were always spent at Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester, with her family and many cousins. During World War II Anne served in a message decoding unit. After the war she lived and worked in California. Later she returned to Gloucester where she resided on Rocky Neck for about 50 years until 2008. She owned and operated a bed and breakfast on Rocky Neck for many years.
Annie loved to travel and took many trips with friends and family all over the world. In addition, she maintained a strong interest in antiques and genealogy. Well known as the family historian, she spent a great deal of time researching and recording family histories and genealogies as well as passing down lots of stories to the next generations. She was a member of and involved with the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Essex Society of Genealogists, the Cape Ann Museum and the Daughters of Colonial Wars.
"Cousin Annie", as she was known to many, will be greatly missed by her surviving cousins, Jan Hawkes, Eric Gallant, George Gallant, Barbara "Annabelle" Saba, Harriet Harding, Deborah H.Kelley, Susannah H. Vaughan, James D.Hawks III, Darbie Hawks, Nina Charles, Cynthia Hawks, Edward A. Hawks III, Susan Ford, Robert Ford, Frederick Ford and Francis A. Goodhue.
Her interment will be held privately in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, New York. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Essex County Trustees of Reservation, Long Hill, 572 Essex Street, Beverly, MA, 01915, Attn: Advancement Department.
