Obituary

HUMAROCK – Louis C. Vanderstreet, Jr., 84 of Humarock formerly of Brockton, died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at South Shore Hospital. He was the husband of Phyllis (Yesonis) Vanderstreet for 57 years.
He was born October 21, 1926, the son of the late Louis C. and Blanche (Kenney) Vanderstreet. Louis was raised and educated in Brockton and was a 1946 graduate of Brockton High School.
During World War II, he served aboard the submarine USS Bluefish in the Pacific Theater. He earned many awards, among them Submarine Qualification Dolphins, Submarine Combat Pin with two stars, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal with four stars, Phillipine Liberation Medal with one star, Phillipine Republic Presidential Citation Badge and Medal, and the China War Memorial Medal. He also served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Louis was appointed as a firefighter in the Brockton Fire Department in December 1950, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1957, and was made Captain in 1970. In 1976, he retired on disability due to injuries sustained in the line of duty. He then moved his family to Humarock.
Louis was a member of the Brockton Firemen’s Relief Association, the International Association of Firefighters Local 144, Massachusetts Retired Fire and Police Association and the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Association.
He was also a member of the North River Community Lions, the Brockton Historical Society and an honorary life member of the Board of Directors of the District 33-S Lions Eyemobile Committee.
A licensed amateur radio operator (call sign N1WNT), Louis was a member of the Genesis Amateur Radio Club of Plymouth and of the ARRL and the National Association for Amateur Radio.
He also held memberships in many veterans’ associations, including U.S. Navy Sampsons Veterans WWII Association; Marshfield Korean War Veterans, Lopes/Ferris Chapter; Plymouth American Legion Post #40; Submarine Force Library and Museum Association; the Marshfield VFW Post 8345; and Scituate American Legion Post 144. Louis was a life member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII, the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., and the International Submarine Association.
Louis is survived by his wife Phyllis, his son Louis C. “Chuck” Vanderstreet III, and his wife Linda of Woodstock, VT and two grandsons Jason and Ryan. He was the brother of Donald Vanderstreet and his wife Susan of Brockton and the late Rosalie Rounds. He leaves his sisters-in-law Anne Mandeville, Albina Sviokla and Marilyn Yesonis and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Friday at 10 am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 11 am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8 pm. Donations in Louis’ name may be made to the North River Community Lions, 8 10th Avenue, Scituate, MA 02066.
