Nicholas P. Tobichuk, Sr., 92

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Nicholas P. Tobichuk, Sr., 92, of Mansfield formerly of West Roxbury passed away on Friday January 21, 2011 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor B. (Reska) Tobichuk, to whom he was wed for 64 years at the time of her death on March 23, 2003.
Born in Boston, MA on December 3, 1918, he was a son of the late Michael and Pauline (Turchinetz) Tobichuk.
Nick grew up in the West End section of Boston. He was educated in Boston public schools and was a 1936 graduate of Brighton High School. During WWII he faithfully served his country in the United States Navy and on December 12, 1945, was honorably discharged with the rank of Ships Cook 2nd Class.
A retired Tool and Die Maker, Mr. Tobichuk was employed for 40 years at the Boston Cutting Die Co. in Dorchester prior to retiring. When younger, he had worked for G.E. where he invented a spanner wrench which helped to elevate the time needed to repair generators.
Nick was a former member of the Peabody House where he served as an instructor for the sports of fencing and wrestling. He was also a former member of the Ukrainian Club in Mattapan and had participated in the clubs chorus.
Mr. Tobichuk possessed many talents which included building bird houses and clocks. He was a gifted blacksmith and had the ability to fabricated anything from steel. When younger , he along with his son enjoyed building race cars together. A resident of Mansfield for the past 6 years, Nick had formerly made his home in West Roxbury for many years.
He is survived by his loving and devoted children Nicholas P. Tobichuk, Jr. and his wife Mary of Wrentham, John F. Tobichuk and his wife Shayla of Foxboro, Mansfield Town Clerk Helen P. Christian and her husband Larry of Mansfield and Gregory P. Tobichuk and his wife Pamela of Mansfield. The brother of the late Helen Kosawan and Dora Garcia, Mr. Tobichuk is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Nicholas, III, Mark, Denise, Cheryl, John, Peter, Gregory and Michael, great grandchildren Katherine, Mathew, Jack, Nora, Taylor and Gavin, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday January 28th at 10:30 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday January 27th from 4-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Tobichuk’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund 10 Plymouth St. Mansfield, MA 02048.
